Tonsillectomy:
Tonsillectomy is the surgical procedure to remove both palatine tonsils, two oval-shaped lymphoid tissue mass at the back of the throat.
Indications:
- Recurrent / chronic tonsillitis
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- As a part of other oral-pharyngeal surgeries
- Tonsillar cancer
- Following Peri-tonsillar abscess ( Quinsy)
Tonsillectomy procedure is done under general anesthesia, and recovery time for post-surgical healing is 7 -10 days. Most commonly, it is done using cold steel instruments (blade) or specialized surgical instruments like coblator/ cautery.
Almost all patients will have throat pain after tonsillectomy surgery, and it usually takes 7-10 days to subside completely.
Things to do during recovery:
- To take medications as prescribed by your doctor
- Maintain good hydration
- Bland and cold foods those are easy to swallow like ice creams, pudding, mashed potatoes, etc.
- The mother or caretaker should accompany a child (aged five years or less for a week) to look for any oral bleeding, high fever, and difficulty of breathing.
Following are the indications for immediate medical care post-surgery:
- Active oral bleeding
- Fever and severe throat pain
- Difficulty in breathing
- Dehydration
