Adenoidectomy:
Adenoidectomy is the surgical procedure to remove the adenoids that are swollen or enlarged because of repeated infections or allergies.
Indications:
Children show the following symptoms when their adenoids become enlarged.
- Mouth breathing
- Nasal obstruction, nasal discharge
- Frequent ear infections leading to serous otitis media ( Fluids in the middle ear)
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Adenoid facies
An adenoidectomy is usually done under general anesthesia. It is a short and straightforward procedure accomplished using one of many techniques like curette, cautery, coblator, debrider and the patient can go home the same day. Usually, the patient recovers within a week after the surgical procedure. Medication is provided to reduce pain and swelling.
The patient will temporarily have a sore throat, bad breath, earaches, or stuffy-feeling nose during their recovery, which lasts up to one week.
Essential things to do during recovery:
- Keep the body hydrated as hydration helps in alleviating the pain
- Avoid crunchy, hard to swallow, hot and spicy food
- Soft food and liquids to be taken
Go for immediate medical care post-surgery if patient develops oral bleeding, breathing difficulties & choking, high fever & pain.
