What are nasal polyps?

Nasal polyps are growths that form in the lining of the nasal passages. They are found in nasal passages and sinuses, the hollow spaces around your nose. They can be small or large, and they may grow in clusters. In some cases, they may block the nasal passages entirely.

Who gets nasal polyps?

Nasal polyps are more common in adults than in children. They’re also more likely to occur in people who have certain conditions, such as:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic sinus infections
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)

What causes nasal polyps?

The polyps in your nose develop because the mucous membranes lining it changes. Membrane disorders can be a long-term or recurring problem. Inflammation causes the body to become swollen, red, and full of fluid.

The exact cause of nasal polyps is unknown, but they are thought to be caused by inflammation. This may be due to an allergy, infection, or another condition that causes inflammation in the nasal passages. Researchers have found that allergies and infections are behind the inflammation. The doctor thinks he knows all there is to know about nasal polyps because of the tissue taken from them.

What are the symptoms of nasal polyps?

The most common symptom of nasal polyps is a stuffy nose. You may also have a runny nose or feel like you can’t breathe through your nose. Other symptoms may include:

  • Sneezing
  • Nasal discharge
  • Nasal congestion
  • Nasal drainage
  • Itchy eyes
  • Loss of smell
  • Headache

These symptoms can be mild or severe, and they may come and go. In some cases, the symptoms may be so severe that they interfere with your daily life.

How are nasal polyps diagnosed?

Dr. Muaaz Tarabichi and his team will ask about your symptoms and medical history. We will also do a physical exam, including looking up your nose with a lighted instrument called a rhinoscope. If we suspect that you have nasal polyps, we may recommend a CT scan or MRI. The imaging tests can help confirm the diagnosis.

How are nasal polyps treated?

The goal of treatment is to reduce the symptoms and shrink the polyps. In some cases, this can be done with medication. Corticosteroid nasal sprays or oral corticosteroids may be used to reduce inflammation. After the surgery, Dr. Muaaz Tarabichi recommends using a long nozzle to ensure that the polyps do not occur again.
